An
introduction to Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a primary field of health care
with a basic principle that an optimally functioning
nervous system will result is better health. Focusing
on the relationship between structure (primarily the
spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system).
Doctors of chiropractic mobilize (adjusts) joints to
allow and improve motion and function. Chiropractors
are bio-mechanics, or mechanics for your body. A chiropractor
primarily works on spinal joints or vertebra. These
joints can become subluxated (improper function or position)
causing nerve irritation. Freeing a locked joint with
an adjustment and restoring more balanced motion, bodily
processes are permitted to become more normal. Irritation
and stress on nerves, muscles, ligaments, and other
soft tissues are reduced and the body is better able
to return to its natural state, relieving pain.
Treatment however is not limited to adjustments. Physio
therapy modalities (like ultrasound), massage and rehabilitative
exercise procedures are often utilized.
Besides treating patients for back, neck and joint pain,
many chiropractors believe improving the body’s
motion relieves irritation of the nervous system. Since
the nerves control the body’s functions, a well-adjusted
body functions better and is healthier.
As a science, chiropractic deals with the relationship
between the spinal segments and the nerve system, and
the effect this relationship has on the body's innate
ability to express and maintain its good health.
As an art, it entails knowledge, skill and dexterity
to locate and correct vertebral subluxations that can
rob the body of the ability to maintain its own health.
As a philosophy, chiropractic recognizes that the body
has a natural ability to express its health potential
to the fullest. |
